Feb 9/10, 2010: Scholarship and Liberal Education
I would like to pick up a theme from the
previous provocation, of education as formative activity, and bring in
the focus on “scholarship” from last Tuesday's Faculty Development
workshop.
This combination raises a number of questions:
- How should we think of “scholarship”? What happens if
we focus on scholarship as practice, a way of being?
- How is the practice of scholarship formative for us as faculty?
- How does our practice affect the formation of our students?
- How does our post-graduate formation relate to formation for
undergraduates?
- How do we (or should we) evaluate scholarship, whether by
faculty or by students?
I am especially interested in hearing what you might have picked up on
from the presentations, and what might have come up in your table
discussions.
